Atmosphere
An atmosphere (atm) is a unit of pressure defined as 101,325 pascals (Pa). It is used to express atmospheric pressure and other pressures in various scientific contexts.
The atmosphere unit was originally defined as the pressure exerted by a column of mercury 760 mm high at 0°C at sea level. It is now defined as exactly 101,325 Pa.
Kilopascal
The kilopascal (kPa) is a unit of pressure in the metric system. It is equal to 1,000 pascals (Pa). Since the pascal is defined as one newton per square meter (N/m²), the kilopascal represents a pressure of 1,000 N/m². It is commonly used to measure pressure in applications like weather (atmospheric pressure), engineering (tire pressure, material strength), and medicine (blood pressure). 1 kPa = 1,000 Pa = 1,000 N/m².
The kilopascal derives from the pascal (Pa), which is named after Blaise Pascal (1623–1662), a French mathematician and physicist known for his work in fluid mechanics and pressure. The prefix "kilo-" comes from the Greek word chilioi, meaning a thousand, and is a standard SI prefix denoting a factor of 1,000. The kilopascal is widely used because it is a convenient unit for measuring pressures in the moderate range, where the pascal alone might result in very large numbers.
