Year
A year is a unit of time equal to the duration of one complete orbit of the Earth around the Sun. In the Gregorian calendar, which is the most widely used calendar system, a year consists of 365 days, or 366 days in a leap year (every 4 years), to account for the additional 0.2425 days in the Earth's orbital period.
The concept of a year is tied to the Earth's revolution around the Sun, which takes approximately 365.2425 days. Early civilizations, such as the Babylonians and Egyptians, recognized the annual cycle of seasons and developed calendar systems based on the Earth's orbit. The Julian calendar, introduced by Julius Caesar in 45 BCE, divided the year into 12 months and established a leap year every 4 years. However, the Julian year was slightly too long, so the Gregorian calendar, introduced by Pope Gregory XIII in 1582, corrected this by shortening the average year to 365.2425 days, and refined the leap year rule to keep the calendar year in sync with the solar year. This calendar system is now the global standard.
Month
A month is a unit of time roughly equal to 1/12th of a year, or approximately 28 to 31 days. The length of a month varies depending on the calendar system being used, but in the Gregorian calendar, months generally alternate between 30 and 31 days, with February being the exception, having 28 or 29 days depending on whether it is a leap year.
The concept of a month has its origins in the lunar cycle, or the time it takes the Moon to orbit the Earth. Early civilizations, including the Babylonians and Egyptians, used the lunar calendar based on the Moon's phases, with one month corresponding to one lunar cycle of approximately 29.5 days. Over time, as societies began to align their calendars with the solar year, the length of the month was adjusted to fit into the 365-day year. The Gregorian calendar, introduced by Pope Gregory XIII in 1582, is the most widely used system today, with months ranging from 28 to 31 days to account for the Earth's orbit around the Sun. The calendar was designed to bring the date of the Spring equinox closer to March 21st, which led to adjustments in how months are structured.
